Time for an upgrade?
Upgrading your consumer unit (fuse board) is often the better, cheaper option. It’s better than modifying an old installation to meet new regulations. Swapping the unit may need some electrical work to meet current wiring standards. It’s a good investment in your home or business’s safety and efficiency.
What Does an Upgrade Involve?
Updating your fuse board may include splitting circuits or running new cables. Older properties often have only two circuits for all the lights and sockets, which is not ideal. We recommend splitting these. Each floor should have its own circuits and breakers for the lights and sockets, which improves both safety and convenience.
A common issue is borrowed neutrals. A neutral return path isn’t properly connected or is linked to a different circuit. Fixing this often requires installing new wiring to ensure everything’s up to code.
How do you know if your fuse board needs an upgrade?
- Older Fuseboxes (pre-1960s) usually have a wooden back, cast-iron switches, and a mix of fuses.
- No RCD Protection: If your fuse board lacks RCDs to protect the wiring, it’s time to update it. This includes the sockets and external appliances.
- New Projects: Major upgrades, like a new shower or extension, may need new circuits and wiring. This includes adding outdoor appliances.
Safety and efficiency drive fuse board upgrades. Beyond meeting regulations, modern systems protect your property and optimize power usage. A small investment now secures peace of mind and improved performance for the future.
